The Satellite Communications Maintainer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and technical support of mobile satellite communications (SATCOM) systems. Member of highly robust military/civilian team to provide support both in garrison and during long-term, world-wide deployments. Supports local, CONUS and OCONUS exercise and training events. Assists team and customer with pre-deployment planning and preparation. Participates in engineering, integration, and test activities for the supported systems. Deploys to CONUS or OCONUS locations and supports high-priority SATCOM requirements. Applies advanced technical knowledge to troubleshoot and resolve complex SATCOM problems. Coordinates maintenance, sustainment, and support with team, system engineers, subject matter expert site manager, and depot-support staff. Advises management on SATCOM matters. Trains junior satellite personnel as needed.
Major job activities include:
Perform routine, non-routine, and complex maintenance assignments for supported SATCOM systems. This support includes the following sub-systems: communications, networking, antenna, power, timing, signal distribution, trucks, trailers, environmental control, and support equipment.
Provide technical advice, assistance, and maintenance services to military SATCOM operators and management.
Identify and troubleshoot system problems. Conduct tests using a wide range of instruments and test equipment. Analyze results to restore systems or improve performance. Document and report results.
Conduct site surveys in support of CONUS or OCONUS exercises and deployments.
Assist in the planning, preparation, mission engineering of all SATCOM equipment prior to CONUS or OCONUS operations.
Assemble, configure, install, integrate, calibrate, test, and validate equipment.
Participate in training exercises and system deployments in CONUS or OCONUS locations.
Assist with engineering, integration and test activities.
Implement and ensure adherence to operations, maintenance and organizational procedures and policies. Author, review, edit, and recommend changes to technical and procedural documentation.
Account for and ensure positive control of critical resources.
Monitor technical and professional performance and act quickly to correct deficiencies.
Assist in workplace and personnel safety by identifying and mitigating risks and intervenes to prevent mishaps.
Provide telephonic support as required to help isolate and resolve difficult issues.
Train system operators to junior satellite engineers.
To be successful in this position, candidates must possess both breadth and depth of SATCOM knowledge and experience. The candidate must be proficient in SATCOM planning, operations, troubleshooting, repair, and electronics; must be reliable; and must demonstrate a high standard of personal integrity. This position requires the candidate to work closely with military team members in austere locations and space limited environments. The candidate must be comfortable working in deployed locations where resources may be limited and a great deal of ingenuity is often required.
Eight years of relevant SATCOM experience in a DoD environment is required.
Shift work is required while in deployed status; some limited shift work may also be required in garrison. Experience and ability to work 24x7 rotating shifts is required.
Demonstrated ability to work on a remote assignment and the ability to get along with co-workers in a small working environment is also required.
Good written and oral communication skills are necessary.
Four year degree with 4 -6 years of experience in electronics, computer or networks engineering technology is preferred, (Associates Degree can be substituted with 10 years of relevant experience).
Experience with Microsoft Office products is preferred as well as experience with SATCOM test equipment such as time-frequency generators, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and oscilloscopes.
Experience with 1st Space Brigade SATCOM support as well as experience with mobile or tactical SATCOM systems is highly desirable.
U.S. Citizenship and a current Final Top Secret/SSBI Clearance with SCI eligibility is required. Must possess active SCI clearance with current investigation (within last 4.5 years) and be able to maintain a Top Secret Clearance.
