The School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks candidates for the position of Tenured Professor and Endowed Chair of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and Director of the Center for Applied Biomechanics. The UVA Center for Applied Biomechanics (CAB) is one of the largest university-based biomechanics laboratories in the world. It was founded in 1989 and has grown steadily since, with a current staff of 9 Principal Investigators from SEAS and the School of Medicine and approximately 50 researchers and support staff in a dedicated, state-of-the-art 35,000 ft2 facility with world-class computational, experimental, mechanical, and biological resources. SEAS at UVA enjoys a strong, dynamic research program within one of the best comprehensive universities in the world. UVA has made it a priority to encourage interdisciplinary research and the CAB Director will strategically position the Center to benefit from new opportunities presented by UVA's $2.3 billion Strategic Investment Fund, which will provide transformational investments in the quality of UVA's research. The Director will also develop and implement a strategic plan to enhance and expand the extramural research portfolio of the CAB. It is expected that this plan will ensure the continued success of the CAB by leading it into new research areas while simultaneously leveraging its current infrastructure and personnel to grow existing areas of research excellence.

Candidates must possess a PhD in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field and be internationally recognized for research excellence in an area synergistic with the CAB's. The incumbent will have a documented record of significant extramural research funding and experience overseeing a large research group in an academic setting. It is expected that the successful applicant will have Fellow status in a relevant professional society. Preferred applicants will have demonstrated a track record of collaborative relationships with a medical school and across engineering departments, and have the ability and desire to expand the CAB's collaborations with the School of Medicine and SEAS at UVA.
