Department Description

Energy Services is responsible for the provision and operation of utilities (electricity, steam, chilled water, water, stormwater and wastewater) serving the University community exceeding 30,000 individuals, made up of students, faculty and staff employees. Energy Services’ performs an array of services including, but not limited to, the following: production of steam, chilled water and electricity, maintenance of all associated production systems and distribution systems and construction planning and estimating. Energy Services consists of five (5) groups: (1) Cogeneration Systems (generation of electricity and steam and the distribution of steam throughout the entire campus and UNC Hospitals); (2) Electric Distribution Systems (distribution of electrical power throughout the campus); (3) Chilled Water Systems (producing and distributing chilled water throughout campus); (4) Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Systems (for the use and conservation of water as well as the proper management of stormwater and runoff); (5) Administration (provides central financial, facility and human resources functions for the department).

Electric Distribution Systems’ primary purpose is the distribution of electricity to the various buildings on the University campus and to the UNC Hospitals. This is accomplished through a complex system of 12kV underground circuits in duct banks run all over campus, which is controlled and protected by a modern relay and control system.

Position Description

This position serves as the backup to the Planning Engineer and the Operations Engineer of EDS. This engineer will work closely with both these engineers to stay up-to-date on their work on the EDS system, and the methods that they employ to do this work. This position will need to be familiar with the system model used by and with protection calculations performed by the Planning Engineer, The position will also need to be familiar with the SCADA system and its alarms, as backup to the Operations Engineer, and with the settings and communications with the protective relays on the electrical distribution system.

In addition, this position will be called on, from time-to-time, to manage projects and write work orders for work on the EDS system. This will involve using the Maximo system to produce work orders, producing sketches in Adobe Acrobat Professional (or some other graphics software) to reflect the work, and working with contractors and designers on larger projects on the system.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with Schweitzer Electric Relays. NC Engineering License or Engineer in Training (EIT).

Special Physical and Mental Requirements

The environmental conditions vary tremendously from air conditioning and heat to dusty, hot, humid and cold conditions. This position will be required to work in all conditions for various lengths of time depending on the operational requirements. This position will be required to enter confined spaces or hazardous environments with the appropriate PPE in accordance with established procedures. Examples: climb ladders/stairs, ability to move 50+ pounds, etc.
