Department Description

The Chemistry Department is the largest department in the Division of Academic Affairs. There are 43 faculty members, 44 SHRA and EHRA staff positions, 230 graduate students, 54 postdoctoral research associates, 700 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of approximately 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in five buildings with over 580,000 sq. feet of space. The faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per faculty member per semester. The majority of faculty are research-active, and supervise graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, and postdoctoral research associates. Research is funded by federal and private agencies such as NSF, NIH, Army, Navy, DOE, PRF, and involves expenditures of more than thirteen million dollars annually. A total of over twenty-eight million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department.

Position Description

INTERNAL ONLY: Internal posting for permanent, time-limited and layoff priority employees of UNC-Chapel Hill only.

This position has responsibility for independently managing and providing direction, guidance, and leadership for the day-to-day fiscal management of research administration projects for an assigned set of chemistry faculty within the department. As an interdisciplinary research & basic science teaching department we are also dependent on external financial support to carry out our mission. The Business Services Coordinator is at the hub of a quite complex communication & financial fiscal management system which must remain highly flexible and accurate in its response to our faculty for reporting on research funding. Although researchers may respond with enthusiasm to any suggestion of research support, it is the Business Services Coordinator who must work out the details in such a way that is transparent to the research investigator.

This position manages proposal coordination, including both grant and contract proposal submissions, for assigned faculty in the Department of Chemistry. This includes responsibility for the following activities: pre-award planning; proposal development and submission, including but not limited to budget development, preparation of agency forms and documents in compliance with agency and UNC – Chapel Hill guidelines; reporting of pre-award activities; and coordinating materials for post-award. This position reports to the Department’s Research Administration/Accounting Manager.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will preferably have at least 5 years of current University experience with pre-and post-award sponsored research administration. Additionally, work experience with University financial & personnel systems, Starlight, Excel, and other databases is also highly desirable. The ability to prepare & submit single & multi-investigator sponsored research applications as well as progress reports is highly desired, as is the ability to maintain and balance deadlines and details on any given workday. An applied knowledge of Federal Circular is also highly preferred. It is also desirable that the selected candidate be skilled at interacting with principal investigators, lab personnel and department administration.
