Department Description

Pediatric dentistry is the clinical specialty for the treatment of children, adolescents and special needs patients. The Department of Pediatric Dentistry balances teaching, scholarship, patient care, research and professional service activities. Faculty are involved in didactic, pre-clinical, clinical, continuing education and extramural teaching. Students include dental students (DDS) and pediatric residents. The department has eight full-time faculty positions, six salaried/compensated part-time faculty, over 70 adjunct faculty, nine post-doctoral residents, 320 DDS students, 17 full-time SHRA employees and several EHRA non-faculty research staff.

Position Description

The School of Dentistry is seeking a pediatric dental clinic front desk clerk/patient representative. Duties include: Perform receptionist duties for busy pediatric dentistry front desk. Understand and follow clinic/front desk protocols for making appointments in multiple types of clinics (i.e., operative, emergency, sedation, screening, orthodontics, etc.). Provide appropriate documents to parents in advance of appointments. Check in DDS, graduate, orthodontic and craniofacial clinic patients while simultaneously running clinics. Answer multi-line phone in a pleasant and professional manner. Check voicemail and return calls in a timely manner. Make screening appointments for referred patients and correspond with referring providers. Coordinate delivery of patient charts in advance of appointments (paper or electronic). Check on late arrival or appointment no-shows. Perform cancellations and dismissal of patients with a record of multiple missed (broken) appointments or delinquent accounts on supervisory request. Process any payments needed to be made on patient accounts. Balance patient accounting on a daily basis. Record, store, and retrieve DDS student dental models.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Preferred Qualifications

Prefer experience with UNC School of Dentistry EPR or other electronic patient record system. Strong preference for someone who enjoys contact with public, ability to greet and engage with patients and parents, as well as with dentistry residents, students and faculty. Prefer experience with University clinic front desk or dental assisting. Prefer someone fluent in Spanish.
