The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

ORGANIZATIONAL LOCATION: Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Indian Health Service (IHS), Northern Plains Region, Bemidji Area, Cass Lake IHS Hospital, Division of Dental Services, Dental Office, Cass Lake, Minnesota. The primary purpose of this position is to provide professional dental care in connection with the diagnostic treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventative measures and to assist the Dental Chief with managing the dental department and dental program.

- Provides preventative, restorative, surgical, periodontal, endodontic, diagnostic, and rehabilitative oral health services to patients.
- Provides clinical diagnosis, evaluation, studies and treatment services of professionally acceptable quantity in accordance with sound public health practices.
- Provides professional information and educational services to patients.
- Serves as acting dental chief in absence of dental chief.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Travel may be required for training and/or other work related duties.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: Degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA); or other dental school, provided the education and knowledge acquired was substantially equivalent to that of graduates from an ADA-approved school. Licensure: Applicants must be currently licensed to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, or Puerto Rico. Additional Requirements for Grades GS-12 and Above: For purposes of this standard, the following terms are defined.
- Approved internship; approved residency-Training in a hospital dental internship or residency approved by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association.
- Graduate-level study -- Either dental graduate study leading to an advanced degree such as Master of Science, or postgraduate (nondegree) dental school study involving a level of instruction comparable to that provided in a graduated degree program.
- National certifying board -- An examining board in a special area of dental practice recognized by the Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association.
- Board eligibility -- Qualification for examination by a national certifying board as a result of having met the advanced training program requirements for a dental specialty.
Experience and/or training must be one of the following types:
- Post-licensure professional experience in the general practice of dentistry.
- Approved internship training.
- Approved residency training.
- Graduate-level study in an accredited dental school.
- Post-licensure professional experience in a specialized area of practice.
- Other advanced study or training (outside a dental school or hospital) creditable towards satisfaction of training program requirements for Board eligibility.
For specialist positions, experience and/or training must clearly establish the applicant's status as a specialist Agencies should review the applicant's experience to determine the types and difficulty of the cases dealt with, the level of knowledge and understanding of the specialization regularly required, the degree of diagnostic skills and treatment planning ability involved, and the pertinent graduate study acquired. *For GS-12: *Two years of professional dentistry experience and/or training; or superior academic ability defined as that demonstrated by an intern, who on the basis of an evaluation of all interns who have completed training in the same hospital or in the same kind of internship program over the past 5 years, would fall into the upper half of the group.
SUPERVISORY OR MANAGERIAL ABILITIES: Candidates must have demonstrated in their work experience or training that they possess, or have the potential to develop, the qualities of successful supervision, as listed below: A. Assign to and review work of subordinates, train and work effectively with subordinates from a variety of backgrounds and with different levels/areas of training. B. Accomplish the quality and quantity of work expected within set limits of cost and time. C. Plan own work and carry out assignments effectively. D. Communicate with others effectively both orally and in writing, in working out solutions to problems or questions relating to the work. E. Understand and further management goals as these affect day-to-day work operations. F. Develop improvements in or design new work methods and procedures.
IN ADDITION to the abilities required above, candidates must also possess, or have the potential to develop, the ability to:
1) Deal effectively with individuals or groups representing widely divergent backgrounds, interests, and points of view. 2) Adjust work operations to meet emergency or changing program or production requirements within available resources and with minimum sacrifice of quantity of quality work. 3) Establish program objectives or performance goals and to assess progress toward their achievement. 4) Coordinate and integrate the work activities of several organizational segments or several different projects. 5) Analyze organizational and operational problems and develop timely and economical solutions. 6) Represent the activity both within and outside the organization or agency and to gain support for the agency's program goals.

*Specialized Experience: *Experience in difficult surgical extractions, molar rotary endodontic treatment, pediatric dentistry, denture and partial treatment, nitrous oxide administration, stainless steel crowns, and extraction of primary dentition. Experience participating with Quality Assurance projects (competencies, chart reviews, etc.) and accreditation survey preparation. The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
