Role Description

This position requires an innovative scientist who is an expansive thinker and motivational leader. This leader will be a driver of innovation and scientific excellence, advancing the best novel therapeutic hypotheses, targets and molecules. This scientific leader will be expected to foster a group of laboratories within the Inflammation and Immunology Research Unit focused on biological themes that create opportunities for transformational therapeutic hypotheses. The Head of Discovery Research will ensure that our discovery laboratories are recognized for their scientific innovation by driving and responding to rapidly breaking science and evolving global healthcare demands.

Responsibilities

Strategy:Set priorities aligned with the strategic direction from the RU; single point of accountability for management of our discovery laboratory efforts.Partner with the Clinical and Pre-Clinical teams to deliver differentiated and innovative medicines through to positive proof of concept (POC).In conjunction with the I&I CSO, define strategies to identify breakthrough medicines for the Rheumatology, Gastroenterology and Dermatology markets. Contribute to the development of the RU's idea-to-POC strategy by liaising with the I&I Scientific teams, Clinical and appropriate BU leadership.Collaborate with key internal and external biomedical scientists to drive improved understanding of disease pathophysiology to deliver a highly competitive and innovative drug discovery portfolio.Influence the global external environment through a visible presence in the academic scientific community and active engagement with key opinion leaders.Set objectives for the therapeutic area to generate an appropriate return on investment.Influence the global external environment through thought leadership, external visibility and active engagement with key opinion leadersFoster a collaborative and productive environment between Pfizer I&I RU and academic biomedical researchers.Portfolio:Deliver and support a sustainable, highly competitive pipeline from target-to-POC.Ensure scientific strategy for each drug discovery project is rigorous, aligned and effective.Identify and unite emerging science with unmet medical needs. Drive and prosecute a balanced and innovative therapeutic area portfolio of small molecule and biologic based targets, critically prioritized based on rigorous and innovative science. *Interface with senior leaders to ensure target-to-POC portfolio balances risk with opportunity, and exploits the full repertoire of therapeutic modalities.Management:Ensure all activities executed comply with legal and regulatory requirements and with Pfizer corporate policies.Build an "intelligence" capability and external network of biomedical research collaborations and advisors to find the most attractive therapeutic mechanisms.Ensure projects are adequately resourced and prioritized to deliver on objectives.Eliminate barriers and silos that inhibit collaboration across departments and line functions and foster a culture of open collaboration, communication and transparency.Communication:Clearly communicate and articulate the vision and strategy to stakeholders and regularly report on portfolio progress.Inspire, model, and reinforce colleague expectations of urgently creating value at an appropriate return on investment, of applying innovative, rigorous science to discovering new medicines, of individual & collective accountability for value creation, of continuously improving organizational effectiveness.Build a cohort of colleagues with the quality of scientific leadership and external recognition to generate competitive advantage in attracting the best talent and collaborators.Engender a high level of engagement across both direct and indirect lines.Attract and grow highly effective scientists and drug discoverers and nurture a culture wthat translates breaking biological science into new medicines more effectively than the competition.*Effectively, rigorously and accurately review and develop talent. Qualifications

Training & Education Required:M.D., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D.Deep working knowledge of biology relevant to immunologic and inflammatory diseasesKnowledge of competitive landscape for therapeutic area.Prior Experience Preferred:15 or more years experience in researchRecognized deep biological expertise and innovative record of research in a relevant therapeutic area.Established record of delivering high quality drug candidatesEstablished national and international scientific reputationDemonstrated track record of high impact publicationsRecord of team leadership including change management experienceProven entrepreneurial mindsetTECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:Scientific leader in his or her field as demonstrated by external reputation (e.g. publications, editorials appointments and podium presentations at top level scientific meetings)A compelling and inspiring leader with a sharp scientific mind, who combines broad knowledge and understanding of biological systems with being a world-class leader in his/her field of biomedical research.Decision making and problem solving profile which enables marrying emerging science with unmet medical need to identify potential breakthrough medicines, uses this experience to build a sustainable pipeline of drug candidates.
