Purpose

This position will provide advising services and program support which will further promote comprehensive educational opportunities for the undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts Asian Studies program.

Essential Functions

ROUTINE ACADEMIC ADVISING Provide information to students regarding degree requirements, academic policies, and institutional rules and regulations. Advise students regarding course selection during registration, orientation, and throughout the year. Advise students on study abroad and honors. Manage class enrollment by manually verifying prerequisites and adding students to classes when appropriate in conjunction and consultation with Course Management. Meet with prospective majors (internal transfers and new students). Assist students outside normal in-office advising when necessary. DEVELOPMENTAL ADVISING Help students identify and pursue educational, life, and career goals. Make appropriate referrals to the dean's office and campus resources such as UHS, CMHC, the Writing Center, and the Learning Center. Provide SUCCESS advising and completes SUCCESS agreements for students on probation. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES Complete/submit Petitions for Degree Modification. Submit profile change and override requests. Evaluate ANS study abroad courses. Coordinate department scholarships. Help organize student events. Prep materials and coordinate events to recruit new honors students. Work closely with the faculty undergraduate advisors. Address faculty questions regarding student and university policy. Maintain student records in Toolkit. SERVICE TO THE COLLEGE Participate in events including commencement, Gone to Texas, and Orientation. Serve on committees. Liaise with UTeach, UTurn, Foundation Scholars and other Student programs. Other related functions as assigned.

Required qualifications

Bachelor's degree and six years of experience working with college students or in an academic counseling capacity or Master's degree in a related field and four years of experience. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience advising students in the College of Liberal Arts.

Working conditions

May work around standard office conditions

Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation

General office conditions with the majority of time spent in contact with students, staff, faculty and administrators both during and after usual office hours. Some evenings and weekend work required.

A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
