Job Summary:

The University of Colorado School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery has an opening for afull time Professional Research Assistantto work at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. This PRA position entails working with the Principal Investigator, Rony Marwan, MD.

Dr. Marwan's research focuses on the regenerative and fetal biology aspects of common fetal anomalies including congenital diaphragmatic hernias and neural tube defects. His main interest is in pulmonary vascular biology and molecular mechanisms behind stretch induced lung growth. As a pediatric fetal surgeon with such interest, Dr. Marwan's laboratory will interact closely and regularly with both the Laboratory for Fetal and Regenerative Biology lead by Dr. Timothy Crombleholme, and the Pediatric Heart and Lung Center lead by Dr. Steve Abman.

Examples of Work Performed:

Duties include, but are not limited to:

80% of Time:

  • Performing molecular biology applications:

  • Working with a murine model. Will be assisting with strain development and breeding colonies

  • Performing mouse surgeries and assisting in other animal surgeries if needed.

  • Assist in collected human sample if applicable

  • Acquiring and analyzing experimental data

  • Maintaining electronic records of experimental data

  • Mentor summer students and summer projects

20% of Time:

  • Serve as laboratory contact for operational departments such as EH&S, IACUC, OLAR, facilities, etc

  • Maintain Marwan laboratory records and inventories

  • Work closely with other laboratories within the Division of Pediatric Surgery to maintain collaborative efforts between all laboratories.

  • Participate in weekly laboratory meetings. This will include presenting analyzed data and discussing future downstream experiments

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific field with some prior laboratory setting experience

  • Understanding of scientific theory and hypothesis-driven research

  • Ability to work with animal models including rodents, rabbits and potentially sheep

  • Ability to work well in the team environment

  • Familiarity with molecular biology techniques

  • Western Blots

  • Real Time PCR

  • Tissue Culture

  • Flexibility with long hours at times and potential minimal weekend needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of the mechanics of a well-functioning research laboratory

  • 1-4 years' experience in a basic science laboratory

  • Previous experience with animal husbandry

  • Experience performing basic molecular biology techniques such as western blots, real time PCR, DNA and RNA isolation, etc.

  • DNA and RNA preparation from tissue specimens

  • Histological Analysis'

  • DNA/RNA Manipulations

  • Histological analysis

  • DNA/RNA manipulations

  • Embryo culture

  • De-cellularized organs particularly lungs

  • Able to work independently and drive research efforts

Condition of Employment:

Must successfully pass a drug test through Children's Hospital Colorado.

Salary and Benefits:
