Job Summary

Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit at the University of Michigan is a 52 bed Level IV neonatal center serving our region, state and beyond. We remain one of the state's leading referral centers for premature newborns and infants with complex medical problems, complex surgical problems or unusual anomalies, need for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, and whole body cooling for hypothermic neuroprotection.

About 80% of the Newborn ICU admissions are inborn and 20% are transported from our referral region and state. We offer 24/7 neonatal transport services with Newborn ICU RNs as members of the transport team.

Our specialized nursing team members provide quality nursing care to newborns from the acute phase of illness through recovery. A family-centered approach to care is practiced in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.

We provide individualized support and education to families during hospitalization and in preparation for discharge. We empower families to participate in decision making for and in the care of their child.

This position is a 6-month internship program which prepares the new Graduate Nurse for an RN position in Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Orientation includes a combination of classroom and precepted clinical experience. A two-year commitment with a minimum of 30 hrs/wk to Brandon NICU is required after the completion of the 6-month internship program. The initial 6 months will rotate over day, evening, and night shifts. Shift assignment will occur after successful completion of the internship.

This posting will be used to fill four (4) Graduate Nurse Internship positions in Brandon NICU. These positions will have a start date ofTBD (June/July2017) .

Responsibilities*

This is a fast-paced, challenging position in an academic environment fully committed to maintaining EXCELLENCE in family centered newborn intensive care.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES include:

  • Providing safe and efficient nursing care to critically ill newborns and premature infants in an intensive care unit.

  • Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of the newborn or premature infant.

  • Providing Patient & Family Centered Care through collaboration with all members of the health care team in order to meet complex care requirements of the critically ill newborn or premature infant.

  • Demonstrates competence in the implementation of technical skills required for the care of the critically ill newborn or premature infant according to UMHS policies, procedures, and standards.

  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills as evidenced by the utilization of a rapid decision making process in an intensive care environment.

  • Demonstrates full compliance with practices in documentation while providing intensive care to the critically ill newborn or premature infant.

  • Assumes leadership responsibilities in teamwork and patient care delivery.

  • Demonstrates awareness of the importance of research and evidence based practice in the care of the critically ill newborn or premature infant.

  • Identifies and assumes responsibility for one's own learning needs.

  • Actively participates in quality improvement projects and initiatives related to the care of newborn or premature infants.

Salary & Nursing Framework Level:

This UMPNC RN posting is posted as Nursing Framework LEVEL C (B INC).

Actual Nursing Framework LEVEL and salary will be determined at time of hire.

Nursing Framework levels range from Level A to Level E.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduate Nurse or Newly Licensed RN, who has not practiced as a RN. Applicant must have successfully completed an accredited BSN program

  • Successful completion of the NCLEX must occur no later than 45 days from the individual start date

  • Successful candidate must complete NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) during orientation

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills

  • Highly motivated and organized

Desired Qualifications*

  • Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher

Work Schedule

Hours per week: 40

Shift/Hours/Days: Permanent night shift assignment will occur after completion of the internship; shift length to be determined at end of internship based on unit needs; two of four weekends per four-week scheduling period.

Location: Mott Children's Hospital - 8 West, Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit

All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
