The University of Michigan Health System, regionally and nationally known for its commitment to providing high quality, family-centered patient care seeks bachelors prepared graduate nurses for our Adult Emergency Department Nursing Internship program starting June 5, 2017. The UMHS Adult ED is a level one trauma center with approximately 80,000 visits per year, providing a fast paced and exciting work environment. Our nurses serve as integral members of a multidisciplinary team providing care for adult patients in a variety of treatment areas.
This is a 4 to 6 month internship program which prepares Graduate Nurses for a Registered Nurse position in the Emergency Department. Orientation includes a combination of classroom and precepted clinical experience. A two (2) year commitment to the department is required after completion of program. The initial 4 to 6 months will rotate day, evening, and night shifts. Shift assignment will occur after successful completion of internship.
The UMHS Adult ED is a level one trauma center with 87 rooms capable of cardiac monitoring, including 5 resuscitation bays. The Emergency Critical Care Center (EC3), a section of the Adult Emergency Department, is now open and offers specialized care for severely ill or injured adult emergency patients. This Center has 9 critical care beds available. Our Registered Nurses are capable of caring for patients who present with a variety of injuries or ailments, ranging from minor to life-threatening. Patient priority is determined by using the Emergency Severity Index. Nursing staff will receive the specialized training necessary to care for patients within specific areas of our department, for example triage and resuscitation. Documentation occurs for all patients in an electronic medical record.

The candidate must be a Graduate Nurse or Newly Licensed Registered Nurse, who has not practiced as a Registered Nurse.
Candidate must have successfully completed an accredited BSN program.
Successful completion of NCLEX must occur no later than 45 days from the individuals start date.
Successful candidate must obtain ACLS during orientation, and obtain Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) certification within 6 months post orientation to maintain position. These can be obtained through UMHS Emergency Department.
Must be available to start Internship on June 5, 2017.

Excellent interpersonal communication skills are desired.
Experience in an Emergency Room, ICU, or as a Paramedic is desired.
Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher is preferred.
Hours Per Week: 40 hrs, 8 & 12 hr shifts
Shift/Hrs/Days: Permanent shift to be determined at the end of the Internship
Location: Emergency Department, Graduate Nurse Internship
All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U-M Professional Nurse Council union, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
