The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) Dean of Faculty, Department of Engineering, anticipates filling the TERM (full-time) position of Assistant Professor of Systems Engineering, beginning on 1 June 2017 and terminating on 30 June 2019. Subsequent re-appointments up to 4 years in length are possible and will be based upon an assessment of performance, Air Force and departmental needs, and financial constraints. This position is in the excepted civil service.

The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), located just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is an undergraduate institution that awards the Bachelor of Science degree as part of its mission to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead in the United States Air Force in service to our nation. Faculty applications are invited from candidates who can contribute to this mission by interacting with cadets, both in and out of the classroom, as instructors and mentors. The student body consists of approximately 4,000 men and women representing every state and several foreign countries. The Academy faculty is an integrated group of military and civilian educators. The curriculum includes core academic and professional courses, and 27 disciplinary and interdisciplinary majors.

Major Duties:

Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate systems engineering courses to officer candidates and fulfill other systems engineering program duties. Selectee will direct and perform research in systems engineering related projects, and participate in academic advising and mentoring. Candidate will also oversee systems engineering program assessment and accreditation activities.

Required Qualifications:

A Doctoral Degree (to be completed by application deadline) in engineering focused in one or more of the areas listed in Academic Disciplines below by the time of application.

*Academic Disciplines: *Preferred: Systems Engineering or Industrial Engineering. Acceptable: Systems Design, Systems Analysis, Systems Thinking, Systems Modeling, Engineering Management, Human Factors Engineering, Software Engineering, Decision Analysis, Design Optimization, Operations Research, Risk Management, other engineering disciplines (e.g. Aero, Astro, Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, and Software).

Desired Qualifications:

Leadership experience in curriculum development and academic assessment is desired. Applicants will be assessed based on their teaching credentials, scholarship, service, and education.

Candidates with a record of peer-reviewed research and publications as well as systems engineering teaching experience are highly desirable. Candidates should have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching.

Salaries are competitive, include a cost-of-living adjustment, and also cover non-teaching summer months.


You MUST provide copies of "OFFICIAL" transcripts for ALL levels of post-secondary education (Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degree) being pursued or attained to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Photocopies of "OFFICIAL" transcripts are acceptable for initial application submission. However, if selected you will be required to provide (original) copies of your "OFFICIAL" transcripts. For a transcript to be considered "OFFICIAL", it should be printed on university letterhead and the registrar's official seal/signature must appear on the transcript. Transcripts labeled "UNOFFICIAL" will not be accepted.


Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the educational requirements. However, you must show proof that the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in a conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying in the form of an "official" statement of U.S. equivalency from a Department of Education (DOE) approved (non-federal) agency (i.e. AICE, NACES), who will complete a U.S. Standard of Education Conversion.


The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation leading to successful completion of a background investigation with a favorable adjudication. The selectee's failure to meet this requirement will be grounds for termination.
